Your help is needed once again . Item #1

by Andy
(LONDON)

I wondered if I might trouble you again with helping to identify a few more items. Again, as before, I have tried with the limited sources I have available to me to identify them but I have little that doesn't constantly contradict itself. In short I am in a bit of a muddle with all three items. I actually have more than the three items to identify still but I will not clog up your Blog. I will keep trying to research the others until a later date.
The first is a plate/ dish, which I believe could be Swatow ware Ming period but not 100%. It is 7 3/4 inches in diameter and 1 1/2 deep with a scalloped edge. There appears to be a Kylin (?) painted rather crudely in the center. The glaze is quite thick and has all the imperfections which you would expect with something old. I have taken several pictures which I will send. Hopefully these may help you and fill in the gaps of what I havent mentioned. I Will send the other info separately with the images.
Thank you in advance and Best Regards,
Andy

This is just the info that I needed on this one. Thank you Peter.

ming plate
by: peter

Andy, I forgot to add something. The likelihood that it is Ming Xuande or later (mid-Ming) is greater than that it is earlier. That is, unless this plate shows signs that it is from a shipwreck and has been subjected to the bleaching effect of the sea.
The blue color looks as if domestically sourced pigments were used. Please look at the last two lines of this page: https://www.chinese-antique-porcelain.com/blue-pigments.html

Thank you

Thank you for your thoughts on two of my three items. Thats perfect Peter, Qilin, thats the one I was thinking but got wrong! I did not know it could be as early as early Ming so this is fascinating. Thank you for your time, Andy

qilin plate
by: peter

This one could be early or mid-Ming dynasty, as far as I know; a standard item, I would say. I have one of these too. Personally, I don't think that it is Zhangzhou ware (Swatow). It actually seems to exhibit some characteristics of another kiln, but not sure if this is an accident.
Shown is what is called "the Qilin gazes at the moon" in Chinese.
