foot rim
by: peter

I think a real close picture of the foot rim would be appropriate. Only a partial shot, but close enough to see the shape of the rim, and with a resolution good enough to see the grain of the unglazed portion of the rim.
But any closeups of blemishes, imperfections, etc. may help also.

Ming ?
by: Arto

There is some small dots, and it looks like some kind of brown rust around them..
The colour is pretty dark blue, and it has a little areaa on the rim, twhere the colour seems to be a little "smeard".

Plate

Peter, Arto,

I don't have a problem with the glaze, although it is a little too pristine. What I do have a problem with is the topside decoration. It is too stiff and lacks the spontaneity and quickness usually seen on Ming porcelain. This kind of decoration is more likely to be found on Qing items.

The blue is a bit dark in the pictures. How close is it to the actual, Arto? How about some more close-ups?

Also, what can you tell us about the history of the plate? Did you buy it yesterday or has it been in your family for a number of years?

colors, etc.
by: peter

For me, what it is depends much on whether your pictures show true colors or not.

The blue in the pictures is a bit darker than is common for Ming wares. It resembles neither the imported Mohammedan blue nor the domestically mined pigments.
And the glaze is a bit too reflective for that period, although it is possible to see such glazes occasionally.

About the glaze
by: Arto

The glaze feels a little bit "orangish" and there are a lot of smann dimples, like small sand grains in the glaze..can it be from 1600 or is it a newly made plate ?

Feel the glaze
by: Tim

How does the glaze feel? Is it smooth and soft?
Have you felt the glaze of Ming porcelain? How does this one compare?

May be old, but not Ming dynasty, as the mark says.
The mark is apocryphal. (There are no closeup pictures of decoration and foot rim.)

Judging from the current pictures it could be a late Qing dynasty item. This opinion is based on the foot rim shape and the tone of the blue color.
