Tongzi marking large vase. Question

by Tyler
(Toronto)

Hello peter I have this vase that has a marking similar to Tongzi. I know its not very old but what time period would you say? 1940's? The paint has lots of bubbles when held to the light properly. Thank you

This is a temple jar with its lid missing. The forties would be the very earliest I would consider. You might give an additional three decades space.

You cannot use bubbles to determine age with a 20th century item. The technology for minimizing bubbles was already developed then. Thus, we cannot know whether bubbles were added intentionally or not. Usually they are in the glaze. Bubbles present in the colors can be due to improper handling or, in modern terminology, due to insufficient quality control.
