temple jar
by: peter

The name "temple" comes from the lid, which resembles somewhat the shape of the eaves of temples. The Chinese name would be "general's jar", translated, for the same reason. The lid resembles the shape of head wear worn by these in old times.

A clear picture of the bottom is usually most important for judging age.

From the blue background color and the style of the butterflies I think , however, that it cannot be early republic. At the most second quarter or third quarter of the 20th century. That means, if the jar was purchase in the 70s, it probably wasn't very old by then. The black outlining and colors are really signs of the era the item was made in. However, in the early republic this would be a big question mark... because many painting styles hadn't changed that much yet from the Qing dynasty styles.
