Similar Lung Dragon but not the same

Finer finish, less detail

Finer finish, less detail

Peter, I have previously posted photos of the 5 clawed dragon figure I have. Here is another photo of a similar but different dragon. There are obvious differences . What is your opinion of the finer finish and difference in detail between the two. Is there a source where I could view what the real original looks like ? if he exists.

Hi John,
I don't think what you want to see (a prototype or original) does exist. Generally said, such figurines would probably have been made late Qing dynasty to republic era at the earliest, as standalone figurines. There were fewer figurines made in the distant past.
But, it looks 20th century to me. Have you looked at the eyes? They look like the eyes of humans, not at all what they look like in paintings, etc.

Basically, such figurines of dragons were never popular as standalone figurines. However, the shape of the arched back, etc. makes it look similar to those dragons on the roofs of temples. Looks actually as if it could be one of these, if there were no base.
Such figurines are still being made today as temple roof decoration, but they are not necessarily porcelain.
