Shape of ming vase or porcelain pot

Peter. a question for you.... I have the opportunity to buy a ming pot however the neck is octagonal which worries me greatly. Do I remember reading one of your articles where you described the vast majority of pots or vases as being four or six sided but rarely any other or have I misconstrued the text of your work. The pot I looked at has eight sides at the rim but then fans out quickly in to the belly shape to the rounded base. Other than this the decorative motifs are all hand painted underglaze blue.....and sorry not mine to send you a picture or two. Also my enquiry relates only to where a pot or vase has this type of shape as I realize the commonality is the circular neck or rim. And..is there any particular time when the four or six sided necks and bodies appeared Chinese pottery

Without pictures I really cannot imagine what you have. But, I wonder how much you know about antique Chinese porcelain? If only little, then my advice is to stay away from Ming porcelain until you are familiar with Qing dynasty ceramics. The less you know the more likely you are getting a fake. Even if your source is a minor auction, there is still a good possibility that they have fake items, unknowingly.

If you are not familiar with fakes, I would recommend reading this page: https://www.chinese-antique-porcelain.com/fake-antique-porcelain.html
Read especially also the page linked at the bottom of the page (the last link).

Many people just go ahead and buy, thinking they get a bargain, or an opportunity that does not come again, and then get a fake.

It would be better if you first get pictures before you buy. Anybody who does not let you take pictures is a potential seller of fakes. My personal view.
