No Mark, Is this Chinese?

I've had this piece which has intriqued me for years. It's primitive, but could it be Chinese? It measures 1 5/8" high and is 2" in diameter. Thank you for your help.

The shape and scale-like exterior make it unlikely to be Chinese. At least, I never saw this shape or decoration in Chinese porcelain.
