Hi Stan,
This would fall into the category of jars, at least for the Chinese. It would have been used with a lid or cover of sorts.

Seems to be a Ming dynasty jar, with the character "Fu" (Happiness) as decoration.
I cannot tell you which reign it is from, exactly. It appears that these jars were made over a long period time, not limited to a certain reign or dynasty.
