17th - 18th or 9th Century ?
by: John H

Thank you Peter, but how does a person know for sure ? I saw one that sold recently at an auction, he looked very similar but not exactly the same.
How does a person tell the difference between 19th and 18th or for that matter 17th century ?
Who is the final authority ?

Good question.
You have to learn about lots of things, like shapes, glazes clay, decorations used in different dynasties or reigns, characters, Chinese history, culture, society and lots more...
With these you can to some degree evaluate whether a certain item, glaze, decoration, etc. would have been possible in a specific period. The dragon, for example, was ever changing throughout the ages.

There is no one who knows it all. That is why it is always better to ask for two or more opinions. Those who claim they know it all are not telling the truth.
