Ugly vases

the more I look at these vases the more i think they are somebodies bad attempt at Chinese Crackleware given the overall crazing. Doesn't alter the fact they are hideous but doesn't explain the backstamp.

Thank you, Peter. A voice of sanity. Having trawled sites for information and noting the finesse, refinement and glory of Japanese wares I would have thought anyone producing such monsters would have been imprisoned for life. Although someone has gone to town with the gilding and enamels! Off with their heads and into the bin!

Appreciate your comments.

Hi, they really do look a bit odd. :-)
The upper part seems to depict Japanese warriors, while the lower part shows Chinese boys.

Looks like a recent product ro me, with a completely incongruous decoration.

BTW, that is not a Nippon mark. The first character is the same, the second one seems to be the character for 'East'. So it is either read Ridong in Chinese or Nitto in Japanese.
I doubt that this is Japanese; having lived in Japan for many years I feel that their quality consciousness would not allow such an item being made in Japan.
