Printed ?
by: Steve

Thanks Peter -
You're right - I looked at it with a 60 power magnifier and it is printed - very fine detail - but not hand painted.

I appreciate you guiding me in the right direction -

Hi Steve,
I can see why you think it is not transfer ware.
It really is very fine.
However, after viewing the details in the last images, I'm even more convinced that it is not Chinese. First the pattern ... this appears to be the Chinese willow pattern, but I can't see any weeping willows. Second, there is much too much detail in such a small plate. This is more typical for European art. You can even see a person inside the pavilion. And, there are waves, drawn, for example. This is all unlikely in Chinese art. The boat's proportions are also a bit unusual. Further, the rim of Chinese clobbered porcelain is usually not looking this way.

Considering all the factors, I still think it is Chinoiserie, not Chinese porcelain.
As to the printing, could it be another, newer printing method? Later printed porcelain often shows much finer decorations and has a better print quality.

Thanks for your comments Peter.
I don't think it's transfer becasue with the loupe I don't see dot pattern. I will send you close up photos. The rim is not thicker them the center of the dish.

Hello,
Is the dark rim made of blue, very thick enamel? I assume it is not a metal rim that was added?

The decoration shows a Chinese motif, but from these pictures it seems to be transfer printed. This makes it unlikely to be Chinese.

It might be possible to tell more if some details of the picture were enlarged, like the boat with figures, etc.
As the pictures are a bit too small, it is difficult to see details, but it probably is either European chinoiserie or Japanese porcelain, rather than Chinese.
