Help Understanding the markings on Etched Brass Bowl?

by Anthony
(N.Y.)

I came upon your wonderful website while attempting to decipher the period markings from this recently acquired brass bowl. I was hoping someone could shed some light on the meaning of the characters and from which time period it may have originated. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Very quick response, love your informative website...

unfortunately, this piece isn't what I had hoped it would be so it looks like the kids won't be able to go to college after all...;P

Hi, the mark does not help anything as earlier marks were copied/faked over centuries in later eras.
In this case the mark tells us that the item is likely a 20th century item. The mark is a Ming Xuande mark, which is still used on currently made items. The mark is exceptionally crude, and one character is different from the contemporary Ming one. In addition there is CHINA marked, These all mean that the item is probably of a more recent manufacture, I'm afraid.
