Hi Peter,
Could you please have a look at this Cixi bowl? Do you think it is from Guangxu period?

Peter,
Thanks a lot for your opinion. I agree with you that it is very tricky to deal with Dayazhai porcelain. For this piece, I am sure that it is not official porcelain made for Empress Dowager Cixi. What I am not sure is that whether it is made during Republic or Guangxu. Anyway, thanks a lot for your opinion.

Dayazhai bowl
by: peter

Hi Viscount,
Looking at these pictures it is difficult to tell age. Would need high resolution or closeup pictures, also of interior and foot.
From these pictures it looks a bit new. Do you realize that the green bottom is quite shiny (at least it looks that way in onethe picture), while with old one it is usually dull?

Recently I have seen a similar Dayazhai bowl. That one was clearly old. It had a lot of fine crackles which apparently developed naturally, meaning it was old. The painting, colors, etc. everything seemed right. In the end I didn't go for it for one single reason; the red color of the bottom mark seemed a bit darker than those of normal red Guangxu marks.
As far as I know there are a lot of copies out there, even old copies made in the early republic. This means that in view to age signs they might be similar to the real Dayazhai.

Anyway, if the bowl is yours or you have access to the actual item, I trust you can better judge its age signs than I do, via pictures. Is the foot rim all right?

My position with a Dayazhai item generally is - if there is one single doubt, I would leave it, when I evaluate buying one. I have seen several, but I doubt that any of them was genuine.
Dayazhai is like imperial ware. It entices the fakers to make copies. Be careful and don't spend too much ... :-)
