Hi Peter, here is a snuff bottle, I just purchased, can you tell me what it says on the bottom and what do you think of the age, the person I bought it from said he had it for over 17 years, it looks old to me, age signs and all, thank you for your assessment.

Stan, this is porcelain, but I must say that I do not have much experience with carvings, even less with painted carvings. The colors are fine for 19th century, in my view. Jusging by these pictures, the white glaze and bottom should be fine too.

I remember being told that the snuff bottles with a complete "level" mouth are later. But I forgot how the older (Qing) ones should look in that place. I believe the surface should be slightly slanted, but not sure inwards or outwards. Will try to find this in my notes.

Hello again, I viewed a couple sights on snuff bottles, thanks for that info, I found a bottle similar to mine however it was the same style but clearly an newer bottle, 19th c, the one I have is clearly an older bottle, I found another on ebay the was almost identical to the one on the snuff bottle forum, the bottle on ebay is claiming to be m&p, you can view it if do a search on ebay and search " antique qianlong m&p famille rose carved 18 immortal porcelain bottle". Thanks to you Peter and your web site I can at least tell the difference between older and newer porcelain, the bottle on ebay is listed for $25,000. for my sake, I hope he gets it. thought on just how old do you think my bottle is?

I have seen this type a couple of times. Looks old to me, but I doubt it is M&P. It has a Qianlong Nianzhi mark. I would think it is rather later than the mark.

I assume you know that there are a couple of forums specialized on snuff bottles? They might have more examples of this type. And, if you do an image search using "carved porcelain snuff bottle" you should find a number of similar ones.
