Appraising
the age of Chinese ceramics
This
reference book
is essential for collectors to whom the
easy availability of informations for dating of Chinese
ceramics is important. The
content fills
some knowledge gaps with
details easily available
without the need to read up
books and internet for
the essential information. No need for knowing the Chinese languange
etiher. It enables more
reliable and rapid dating.
For example: Have you ever wondered what
experienced collectors or professionals look for to identify whether a bowl at hand is from the Song dynasty or the Yuan dynasty, if they have the same type of clay, glaze and shape, but no other decoration?
This book provides some a simple
answer
to this question to understand this for good!
To be clear, such uncertainty is not something
specific to one’s educational background or study of the
subject, even those working in museums and auction houses
are never perfect when it comes to Chinese ceramics. Believe
it or not, even experts working for the world’s top few
auction houses are not always capable to decide if an item
is authentic or not. The same is valid for museum
researchers.
My journey to
Chinese ceramics:
Initially,
I spent years reviewing every day dozens
of items presented by
collectors for evaluation on the Chinese web.
Although I slowly got to understand what to look for,
there always remained
these questions that nobody answered.
Then, I had the opportunity to attend authentication
sessions every week, which
resulted that instead of the crawl at which I learned by myself my
knowledge increased in leaps and bounds.
The man who did the
authentications (we called
him the “consultant”) had close to 40 years of collecting
experience, but still did not know it all. But, at those sessions he
provided
many hints and pieces of information, which seemed
to help filling
in some of the gaps and questions that my own collecting experience and study of the subject did not resolve. Often simple pieces of
information answered questions I had trying to authenticate items myself in the process of accumulating
a collection.
“How to Quickly Identify Chinese Ceramics”
“Time-saving Access to Information Regarding
Certain Details
of Chinese Ceramics
Decisive for Rapid Dating of Antique Porcelain
Making Your Appraising More Efficient”
What you find in this book are large numbers of simple
knowledge bits not commonly found in books and the internet,
but which often are important for dating decisions.
These pieces of information can usually only be acquired
over long years of study or if you are lucky, taught by a
mentor who already knows these.
The content of this book is limited to Chinese porcelain of
major mainstream kilns, to be sure. There are lots
of minor kilns, but there is not one specialist who knows it
all, not even in China. Often “experts” or “specialists” of
auction houses have no clue about items other than those of
types or periods they see often.
Much of what is known pertains to antique ceramics from the
early 20th century back to the Sui/Tang
dynasty... a period of about 1500 years of ceramics, and at
the very least a few "hundred" kilns, more likely a few
thousand, if the many peripheral kilns are included. How
could one person know it all about their products?!
What you get in this book is some basic information
that shall fill in some of the gaps of knowledge that you
may have from your own research. Precondition to using this
is that you already are capable to identify real age signs
and if possible have experience identifying or dating
Chinese ceramics.
You will find an overview of some major kilns, which the
ceramics of which you may likely encounter during your own
study of the subject. We need to be aware that there exists
little information on wares from 'before' the Song dynasty.
That means wares made during the Tang dynasty and earlier.
That is simply because there is virtually no information in
writing from those eras. Most knowledge relating to those
earlier periods is limited and originates from archaeology.
Song dynasty and later eras have also more related
information in the form of contemporary literature
mentioning ceramics, and more items are extant today.
The information in this book will definitely help you
explain some things that everyone with sufficient basic
knowledge of antiques already has. This assumes you already
have a certain minimum level of experience.
Even if you are already in a professional position like in a
museum or auction house, or dealership, there is always so
much to learn.
Do you collect? Are you dealing in antiques? If you do then
you should preferably be able to identify and authenticate
items yourself. Saying it a bit bluntly, when it comes to
Chinese ceramics it is necessary to contend with scores of
fakes, but relying on what museum researchers or auction
house experts say is not always reliable. Dare I say it...?
Correct identification of antiques is never guaranteed; even
the world's top auction houses offer sometimes erroneously
attributed items at auction. Longtime collectors may have
spent more time researching or studying specific types of
ancient items than their “experts”. Auction houses are
primarily selling outfits; for them appraising and
identification is necessary to reduce problems, but they
cannot spend much time learning about specific items. Their
primary purpose still is “selling”.
You can find examples of “sold” but wrongly attributed items
from major international auction houses online, which
sometimes even people without specific knowledge may
identify as bing incorrect. -- The real reason is not that
they need to be ‘right’ in the first place, the items need
to sell, that is more important to them .
Thus buying via auction is
often not a guarantee for authenticity of antiques either.
Auction houses have legal clauses which you have to agree
to, protecting themselves from errors like wrong
attribution, although major auction houses strive to have
the items they sell to be authentic. Guess why they often
refuse items! It is doubtless not always because the item in
question has a problem, the problem may simply be that their
experts are not sure in specific cases. This may more often
than not the case with Chinese ceramics, due to the rampant
faking in this field. The best solution is always to have
the relevant expertise yourself.
Identification
criteria mentioned herein assume
you have already some
prior knowledge
regarding the more
basic authentication features of Chinese ceramics. What is provided here are pieces of
information applicable for intermediate level
identification.
Paying attention to
details and analyzing individual features or the absence of such on an item viewed is THE
method for authentication.
The only other method that may compare to this, if
applied correctly, is scientific material analysis
using modern equipment and technology. But as of now it is not widely available
yet to
collectors,
and it is expensive!
Again, what this ebook does for you:
-
It gives you an
overview of the very early mainstream ceramic kilns
producing before the Ming and Qing dynasties
(1368~1911) – namely from the Tang to the Yuan
dynasties, in case you need to identify any such
wares.
-
For time-saving
dating/verification
many hints
of individual
small
details are
given, that make dating
simpler and more reliable.
-
Instead
of intuition and decades of experience you can learn
about numerous
traits and features of
ceramics to
assist with
dating.
Have
you tried identifying or dating ceramics outside your
specialty range or periods?
“Of course you have!!!”
So what was the result? Tried to find additional
information online or
in books to make sure?
-- To be sure, we all do!-- it can be
time-consuming...This book
can make it easier by
producing results of less known minor
details that may be decisive in dating or
authentication!
With this book you may find the short tips and hints
that you are
missing. The
information pieces that assist in elevating your
understanding of this vast
subject. SAVE TIME and Effort by consulting this
book on any details to quickly
conclude your authenticity
or dating research.

Tired of leafing through scores
of books – or internet sites – to
get the essential information for dating or
verification of Chinese ceramics?
“Click and search” this
ebook to RAPIDLY find results
-
Important pieces of
information gleaned by attending hundreds of actual appraisal
sessions, and more information from Chinese
(language) resources
-
Essential tidbits for appraising often not mentioned in
books or online - tint bits are often decisive
-
Small details not
mentioned in the usual book & internet resources –
use them to you advantage
For Example:
How do you discern early and late Qing items if their
decorations look similar? Something every novice collector
is puzzled about. Instead of looking at decorations, get
to know the differences of the item's base, shape, etc.,
then you can skip the problem and decide based on more
specific features. Decorations can and are often copied or
repeated in items of later periods!
You will find that minor pieces of information make your
identification capability increase faster. Tiny,
apparently minor details are often not mentioned in books.
I learned them while attending actual, weekly appraisal
sessions. The snail's pace at which we learn when learning
on our own from books and internet may become leaps!
