Two small blue and white saucers

by Rudolf
(the Netherlands)

Hi Peter,
I came across the shown blue and white saucers shown, and am intrigued by their design, which shows a traditional Dutch picture. Though I expect the saucers to be Japanese, I would appreciate if you could tell me their probable age and translation of the signature. I think the second character shows a European letter E, possibly for Europe. The pictures shown are not exactly the same.Thank you.

blue and white dishes
by: peter

Hi Rudolf,
Yes, apparently they were made in Japan. And, that is not the letter "E" but the character "日" with the right downward stroke missing.
The mark reads "Dainippon" (Great Japan). Marks using "great" seem to be mostly from the first half of the 20th century, no later. But I do not know if it could be older.
I would have expected these dishes to be printed, but with differences in decoration it could be handpainted. Use a magnifier to verify...
