TRANSPARENT DIMPLE PATTERNED BOWL

by PAUL WASHBURN
(WASHINGTON STATE USA)

BOTTOM SIDE VIEW

BOTTOM SIDE VIEW PATTERN REPEAT 1OF 2 ACCENT DIMPLE ILUMINATION POTTERS MARK

i HAVE NOT FOUND ANY INFORMATION ABOUT THIS UNUSUAL PATTERN
WHICH INCORPORATES APPLE SEED SIZED "DIMPLES' WHICH ARE TRANSLUCENT. I AM NOT AN EXPERT BUT LOOK FOR SPECIAL PORCELAIN ITEMS. I HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS SPECIAL TREATMENT. THESE DIMPLES ARE PLACED IN ORDER AS PART OF THE PAINTED EMBELLISHMENTS OF OF THE TOTAL PATTERN. I HAVE ALSO BEEN UNABLE TO CONNECT THE POTTERS MARK TO A FACTORY. IT SEEMS TO BE A VERY DELICATE, THIN AND OF VERY HIGH QUALITY. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THE PATTERN COLORS ARE APPLIED BY HAND IN A "BURST" PATTERN AROUND THESE DIMPLES IN TWO DIFFERENT REPEATING STYLES AND HAVE ACCENTS IN GOLD. PLEASE ENJOY THESE PHOTOS OF THE BOWL AND PLEASE FEEL FREE TO GIVE YOUR THOUGHTS AND ESPECIALLY THE ORIGINS OF THE DIMPLE PATTERN TECHNIQUES AND COUNTRY OF ORIGIN.

This is a pattern that is very common today. In the west it is called the rice grain pattern, but it doesn't really involve rice grains; assumedly the name comes from the shape resembling rice grains.
The clay is cut out in this grain shape and the space is then filled with glaze, making it transparent.

These items are still made today and the mark is only for decoration. Not an antique.
