Three gourd cartouche signature on Japanese vase

by Simon Puzey
(London, England)

three gourd cartouche

three gourd cartouche

Good morning, the vase in question bears this three gourd design with signature. There seem to be two methods of design - and two different forms of glaze. the vase itself depicts a raptor (eagle) frightening off two wonderfully realised sparrows amongst reeds with tiny gold spot decoration. Any help on identifying this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Japanese mark
by: peter

Hello,
This is a Japanese mark. The first two characters (read from right to left) are translated as "East Lake", but I do not know if it refers to a location (likely) or a name. The rest are the characters for Makuzu Kozan. See jameelcentre.ashmolean.org/collection/6/657
