Temple jar

by Anthony
(Massachusetts, USA)

Dear Peter,

Can you please help me identify the period of this piece? The mark on the bottom appears to be spurious, because it's red and stamped, and I understand that stamping was not the practice during the Yongzheng period. Any information you can provide would be helpful. Also, I am wondering what the battle flag says?

Thanks,
Anthony

rust spots
by: peter

Rust spots that are the result from iron in the glaze may take a long time to appear, but any iron on the surface or any contact with something made of iron may result in deposits. These could rust almost immediately.
That would need a hands-on inspection, perhaps with a magnifier, to identify the cause. Your item is not old enough that the spots could be from iron oxide appearing appearing from within the glaze. I cannot see anything that points to age faking, either.

Thank you for your prompt response Peter. The item appears to have some age (rust spots, wear etc) Do you think it was made to appear old or could it have naturally accumulated those signs if made in the 1950'S or later?
Thanks

Hi, that is a spurious Yongzheng reign mark. However, the decoration is a 20th century decoration, possibly second half or even later.
