Stoneware tulip vase

by Antonia Howard
(Newcastle)

Hello Peter,

I should appreciate your help and advice regarding this tulip vase. Made of stoneware I believe, showing age with extensive under glaze crazing, no marks and I couldn't find another one like this on the net.

Many thanks and regards, Antonia

Many thanks for your opinion. I bought this vase at an auction and the auctioneer said that it was a genuine antique but wouldn't commit to its age without a test.

Down the road from us there is an oriental museum, its curator is interested but I'm afraid it will take up to 6 weeks to get his opinion. I'll let you know what he says.

As for the shape: 18th century Dutch delft tulip vases have similar shape and all have Chinese style:

one sold by Christie's:

and another:

Thanks again, let you know about the curator's opinion, cheers Antonia

Hi Antonia,
I'm afraid you got a fantasy creation here. I have never seen this shape. It looks as if it took a hint from a real antique type, but it isn't old, in my view.

Also, please note that crazing can be artificially created. The most important is the bottom, and that looks pretty new to me.
