Song dynasty bowl - Chaozhou

by Gail
(Vancouver Island)

I have a small porcelain bowl that was given to me when I was in Chaozhou in 1990. It was suggested to me that it was song dynasty from the old kilns in that area. It is 10 cm in diameter and 4 and a half cm in depth. Can anyone identify it?

Product of Chaozhou song dragon kilns

Thanks Peter. However, the bowl is definitely from the Chaozhou region where there still were in the late 80s and early 90s examples of the dragon kilns that it would have been made in. On the border of Fujian province and an area still famous for it's porcelain.

Hi Gail,
Looks quite likely to me, it seems to be Song.
I assume you already have checked out the possibility that it could also have been made in neighbouring Fujian province?
Fujian was one of the major ceramics production areas at the time. Chaozhou and Fujian both are part of the Minnan area and may have been closely related in those times.

With the carving inside it could be possible to locate its origin, but I don't have any resources (yet) to check on products of kilns in the area, I'm afraid.
