This is from a porcelain bowl. Quite a simple one. Age and significance of it?

On an unrelated note, which website would you recommend for antique appraisal on bowls other than sotheby's and christie's? We don't want to pay monthly or yearly fees, but we are willing to pay just one time fee for each appraisal. Thanks in advance...

Difficult to tell what it is. Looks like a very simplified or stylized single character, but impossible to know what it is, really.
(BTW, no professors here :-)
I never used an appraisal, so I can't recommend any. You could try Instappraisal or another. You will find a couple online that are inexpensive.
I would consider it only if it were for higher priced items, though. Just make sure first that they have an appraiser for Chinese or Asian ceramics. Those who handle western porcelain may not be suitable.
