lidded bowl ?

by stan day
(Milwaukie Oregon)

Hi Peter, I just bought this bowl, and I was told that it is a Chinese early 19th century, I can not find any marks like the one on this bowl, is this Chinese export made for Japan, or is it Japanese, I have never seen Chinese figures with hallows, the only thing that I have seen is satsuma porcelain, but I have never seen satsuma like this before, could you tell me if it is Chinese and what it says on the bottom, I will send you more pictures, thanks, from Stan.

the dealer I bought it from is also an appraiser, not of Chinese antique porcelain, but of fine antiques, it wasn't just the money it was the misrepresentation of what he was selling,he should have known better, and so should have I , thanks

money back
by: stan dayt

Hi Peter, thank you for setting me straight on this lidded bowl, lucky for me it was a reputable dealer and he had no problem refunding my money, I was told that it was early 19th century and that it was Chinese, when I told him I had it inspected by an expert he did not argue about giving me my money back, thanks again, for your help, if you ever come to Portland Oregon, let me know, I owe you a dinner. talk with you later, from stan.

Hi Stan, thanks for the offer, but no need for that; but you sound as if it was fairly expensive.

I think Japanese
by: stan day

Hi Peter, today I was looking on ebay to see if I could see any thing like this lidded bowl, I found a lidded bowl that was Japanese with a very similar shape although the one on ebay was imari decoration, could you read the characters on the bottom, I think that I will take this back and get my money back, thanks peter for your help.

Hi Stan,
This looks very odd, like a fantasy creation. From the colors and decoration I would think Japanese, but the lid shape does not look Japanese, and the opening on top...looks to me like that of a censer.
Either new or Japanese, perhaps both, in my opinion.
