Large blue & white jar

by Kathy Clark
(Hartselle, Alabama)

Hi Peter,
I bought this large jar at an auction. Do you know anything about it? It measures about 10 inches tall and about 7.5 inches wide. It looks hand painted and is porcelain.

Virgin but new
by: Kenny

Sorry I didn't mention that "made in China" if it is on the item, that means a new item.

Probably early Qing dynasty

The Chinese letter mean 'Sung Hie' (double happiness)my 20 years experience collecting antiques say it's a virgin item.

Almost the same Jar
by: Mike

I have almost an identicle jar. all the painting is the same but around the very top edge(right below the lid)of mine, the blue lines are much thicker and mine don't have the rings on the bottom. Mine says MADE IN CHINA, and has 2 sheild like markings.(markings are hand painted in the blue color) Anyone have any ideas on this one?

wedding jar
by: peter

Hi Kathy,
This is a so-called wedding jar. It is not exactly for weddings only, but the "Xi" character is used much with weddings, hence its English name, I think.

Yours is a newer one, at the most a few decades old. It looks like the mass produced variety, not hand painted, or only partially. The antique wedding jars are all hand painted.
These jars are still being made today.
