Hello, I would be most grateful for any help in identifying this figure of a Japanese man sitting on straw bales.He has a mallet? in his hand, and a sack across his shoulder.Made of solid porcelain-no marks

This is one of the seven lucky gods. I think it is Daikokuten. If you search for "Daikokuten" you should find lots of information.
