Ivory or fake statues?

Hi Peter, aside from having 2 vases like one of your other correspondents on here. i have these 2 lovely carved items which i don't think are resin as I tried a hot pin test and it didn't seem to do anything but dirty/mark them so I've given up.
I bought them from someone in Malta who said he had inherited them - they are pretty dirty but i'm a bit worried about cleaning until i know what they are.
the base of the lady statue has either been cut and glued back or may be a seam? please see pics attached. The emporor is around 65cm and the empress around 67cm - there is some sort of material glued to base (which i don't want to remove without advice/knowledge)
