INFORMATION SOUGHT ON THIS CELADON JAR PLEASE.

by Andrew

Dear Peter,
I have this greyish/ aqua blue glazed jar which is about 8" high with moulded decoration all around, plus the applied shapes of dragons & face mask loop handles.
There is a tiny chip on one of the dragons which shows very white porcelain underneath at the break.
If you could tell me is this a fake or an earlier genuine piece of celadon from somewhere?
regards, Andrew

Hi Andrew,
Looks old. As you know, this is not (yet) within my field... I'm currently still researching Yuan and Song porcelain.
This looks as if it were pre-Ming, but I cannot tell you which kiln this is from. When collecting Song and Yuan ceramics, items are categorized according to kiln rather than according to reign, as with Ming and Qing wares.

Here is a short introduction:
http://www.chinese-antique-porcelain.com/song-dynasty.html
(Note: the wares of the five famous kilns mentioned are almost impossible to find; of some only a few dozen of complete items are known, the rest is shards.) Those of the eight great kiln systems can still be found, and of course those of other kilns not included in the above. The collecting and monetary value of the former and latter differ quite much.
I would visit the site of Koh Antiques for information on such wares.
