Help Identifying Fish Bowl--Close-Up of Mark

Close-up of bottom mark

Close-up of bottom mark

Here is a close-up of the bottom mark in case it further helps in identification & whether the fish bowl is Chinese or Japanese. (I'm sure the photo is probably not corrected aligned for reading top to bottom.)

Any advice on where I can find out more so I could get a valuation for insurance purposes would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for your help so far, Peter!

Help Identifying Fish Bowl--Close-up of Marks

O.K., thanks, Peter.

Sounds like I don't need to worry about insuring it. When I get a chance, I'll check to see if the marks are under the glaze or added later.

The character is illegible. We do read both Chinese and Japanese here, but it is not right. Originally I thought you had turned it upside down, but when I turned it in an image editor it looked even stranger, as if the person writing it was not knowing how to write Chinese characters and tried to copy the character, with the result of it being unreadable.
Black marks are a bit off the normal anyway. Could this be drawn on top of the glaze with a marker or something, without firing? If it was fired in the kiln, it should be unremovable. I would try some acetone or cleaner/solvent to remove it. If it is gone...all the better, in my view, if it was not original. If it is fired on, then it could mean the whole thing could have been made in Vietnam or elsewhere, perhaps. It would also mean it is newer. Vietnam makes a lot of Chinese crafts today, even for export to China.

If you do search for such pots on Google or Ebay you should get an idea of pricing. Can't be very high, though. High prices are obtained only with antiques that are very rare or otherwise have high collection value.

Information source for antique Chinese Fish Bowl (Probably Pottery)

by Jo

Hi,

My aunt gave me a very large Chinese fish bowl which she got from the attic of a hospital in the late 30's. (They were going to throw it away.)

However, after reviewing this site for a while, I believe it may be pottery. For example, the background color is black with peacocks & flowers. It has an upper turned-in lip. The interior does not have any decorations.

Do you have recommendations on where I can find out more?

Thanks,
Jo

Sorry I don't have photos at this time, but plan to get some in the next few days & will post them later. (Want to wait for assistance with lifting and moving the bowl, as it's delicate and heavy.)
