famille rose charger

I have a large porcelain famille rose dish/charger which is only decorated on the 'foot' of the dish. The rest is a plain whiteish glaze. It is not a lid as the rim underneath is unglazed.....I have never understood why it would only be decorated where no one sees the decoration. Any ideas???
