Famille Noire Plaques

by Monika
(Pretoria, South Africa)

I purchased this set of Famille Noire plaques at a antique shop in Pretoria, South Africa recently. Its approximaley 29.5 inches long and has limited markings at the back. Unfortuantely I do not have much information in terms of provinance. I would be very appreciative of any thoughts on quality/era/value.

As the files are too large to upload on this site - Ive uploaded them on photobucket (thanks for the advice Peter) - I hope the link works as I have never used the site before....

Thank you so so much for the feedback Peter. It is growing on me - now to figure out a way of getting it on my wall as it is quite heavy. I had a look on the web - also could find nothing with the gold 'stems'. Well - this is my fist porcelain piece, so I am glad it did not make mistake with it :)

Ive really enjoyed reading this blog - its very informative. Thanks again

millefiori plaques
by: peter

Hi Monika,
I have never seen Millefiori decorations on porcelain plaques before, mostly I see them as vases or cups, etc.
Before the 20th century this flower decorations weren't plenty, apparently.
From the style I would say it is 20th century - most millefiori decorations with a black background are. The older ones I've seen do not have any background visible, everything was flowers.
I would guess this is from the second quarter of the 20th century, or later. The gilt on black is something that isn't that frequently seen on such items. I'm afraid I cannot help much more with this.
I would suggest you try image searches to find similar items. This decoration is called "millefiori" or "mille fleur". You may have to add "porcelain", otherwise you find different things.

No matter whether this antique or not, it is gorgeous! Congratulations for this find.
