Hello Peter,
thank you for your comments. Attached are a few more photos as requested.
We actually purchased this while on holiday in Vietnam. We were told it belonged to emporer GiaLong. We loved the colours and design. It is large measuring 45cm across and approx 10cm deep.
Your feedback is appreciated. you have a very interesting and informative site.

"Unless you know your stuff it is difficult to recognize an authentic item of this type, and even if you know it, you may not necessary be able to find one.

The foot in the pictures does not look right to me, yet it is the most important thing for judging age.
I would suggest that you try asianart.com to get a second opinion.
BTW, the colors also look a bit off for an antique of that age.

the sgraffito is on all the white spots and in places it does look like it has been painted over. it is clearer in some spaces than others.
We were told the bowl was approx. 150-200yrs old. could this be right Peter?
Thank you for your time and comments.

the sgraffito (I think that is the fine "scratching") appears to be all over, in some places it is clearer than others. where there is white on the place it has the scratchings.
Thank you for your comments Peter.

The shape, underside decoration, and foot rim, do not look right for a pre-1900 item. Personally I think this is a fake.
It also looks as if you have partially a decoration engraved in the white background. This sgrafitto pattern should be covering every white spot and is usually repeated all over. I think the sgraffito is made first and then the painting is added usually. Is the sgrafitto added in "some" places only? Your item should be of top quality if authentic.
It is probable that this was made in the 20th century, not at the time the mark indicates.

Please ask for a second opinion.
