chinese ? vase

I have inherited this vase almost 20 years ago. Prior to that it belonged to my mother and she was given it about 20 years earlier by a friend who originally came from USA and who had had it for quite some time.I just have some dried grasses standing in it on a low table and wondered if I should be looking after it a bit better. I have no idea what it is or how to work anything out from the markings - have tried on the internet but can make no sense of it all.
