Hi Peter, I have this 11 inch punch bowl with European type scenes, do you think it to be late 18th century? My feeling says yes but would value your expert eye.

Many thanks Barry

garland

I agree that the garland may look strange, but so do many other western elements painted by the Chinese painters in Canton. This is what I would call Chinese style western export porcelain. The other type which uses truly European style (western style export porcelain) decoration elements is hardly different from their western counterparts. But it is mostly found in floral designs only.
With this specific bowl the only really typical style found also in other export porcelain of the time is the B/W interior decoration, and the way the faces are painted, which is also present in other export porcelain.

The strange garland around the exterior below the lip, and the decoration in the upper inside are also items I have not seen before. Does this strike you as a pastiche?

seated Europeans

I do, but I couldn't say that it is frequent. I see that this one is also showing a setting in either Canton or another port, which is even rarer.

Have you ever seen 18th century Chinese depictions of Europeans who are ~seated~?

Barry, I think so too. I would say Qianlong.
