Blue and White Jar with lid - is it Chinese???

by Allie
(Wiltshire)

My nan left me this jar when she passed away - does anyone know if it is Chinese and if it could be old? I know she had it for a number of years - my grandfather was an antiques dealer but died in 1975 and she must have had it from then.

blue and white jar

Hello,
Yes, this is Chinese.
From this lid I can tell you that it is a wedding jar, the character is almost always connected to weddings and means "happiness".
However, this is a printed newer version of the originally hand painted jars.
I would think it is at the most a couple of decades old. This type is still widely available and and new ones are also being made, as far as I know.
