chatter marks
by: stan

Peter what is chatter marks, I know there are marks but could you be a little more specific about chatter marks, thanks.

---------------------------
This are straight lines that extend like rays from the center of the bottom. Sometimes only the end near the foot rim is visible, if the bottom is glazed.
This is a period-specific production remnant that comes from shaving the bottom. These can be fake too.

I had hoped you would provide a closeup of the other two figures, if there is a woman. The hair style may give an indication of the period.

Anyway, the pot seems to be old. The chattermarks would mean it "could" be from the early Qing dynasty.
But this again is an item that I do not know what to think (about the decoration).
There seems some battle is going on, on the other hand the back shows a peaceful scene.

Is that water in the back - the horizontal lines? These and the mountains seem to point to Kangxi. The mountains are also copying the inside white area as those of the Kangxi era do. But, what I see in these pictures does not quite look convincingly enough. I might be wrong, though. Underglaze blue decorations of the Kangxi era would show blues of about five levels (dark to lighter),

Might very well be you have something from the Kangxi era, but could also be a copy from later in the Qing dynasty, imitating Kangxi elements. But, judging by these pictures it indeed looks as if it were Qing dynasty.
It is relatively rare that the whole brush pot is painted all around.

Stan,
Could you make closer pictures available; needs not be the whole thing, just partial. Of interest are the first, second and fourth image in the first post. People's faces should be clearly visible in the first and last one.

bottom
by: peter

We encounter occasionally bottoms that were covered with a yellowish or dark brown, thick paint-like something. For whatever reason this was applied, this can be okay. But we need to be on the watch for those that were applied for hiding the unglazed foot or foot rim. The fakers know that these are the most essential points for checking and try to hide them. These usually have a slightly less thick consistency and are either black, dark brown or gray.

ladies
by: peter

The hairstyle is not Kangxi. Kangxi hairstyles show the hair high on top. Here the woman facing to the front could have a bun at the back of the head, but the other?
